Richard Descoings, Director of the Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po Paris), Administrator of the French National Foundation for Political Science (FNSP) and Conseiller d’Etat (State Councillor). After his studies at Sciences Po Paris and then at Ecole Normale d’Administration, Richard Descoings entered the Conseil d’Etat (Supreme Administrative Court) where he was named Conseiller d’Etat in 2000. From 1991 to 1993, he participated in the Cabinets of the Ministers of Budget and National Education.
Director of Sciences Po Paris since 1996, Richard Descoings has distinguished himself through his ambitious reforms, notably those aimed at favorizing equal opportunity in admissions to Sciences Po and the internationalization of the University. The most remarkable of these being the creation in 2001 of a specific access network for high school students from underprivileged neighborhoods.
In January 2009, he was appointed by President Nicolas Sarkozy as the head of a preliminary mission on high school reform.
Richard Descoings was decorated as a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honor) and of the Ordre National du Mérite (National Order of Merit) as well as the Palmes Académiques (Order of Academic Palms).
He is the Author of “Sciences Po: de la Courneuve à Shanghai” (“Sciences Po from la Courneuve to Shanghai”).
John Coatsworth became Acting Dean of the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in 2007 and Dean in 2008.
He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Board of Directors of the Tinker Foundation, and numerous professional associations. He is a former president of the American Historical Association and was recently elected to the presidency of the Latin American Studies Association. He is the author or editor of seven books and many scholarly articles on Latin American economic and international history.
Dean Coatsworth received his BA in History from Wesleyan University in 1963 and his MA in 1967 and Ph.D. in 1972 in Economic History from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1969 until he joined the Harvard faculty in 1992. From 1992 until 2007, he was Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs at Harvard, where he also served as the founding director of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies from its creation in 1994 until 2006.
Dean Coatsworth was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1986, served as Senior Fulbright Lecturer three times (for appointments in Argentina and Mexico), and has received research and institutional grants from public agencies and private foundations in the United States and elsewhere. He has also acted as consultant for program design or review to numerous U.S. universities and private foundations.
